The Ondo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has approved a ₦3.5 billion counterpart fund for the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) to support the construction and renovation of public primary schools across the state.
This decision was made during a State Executive Council meeting chaired by the governor. Commissioner for Education, Olaolu Akindolire, announced that this fund would be provided at zero interest, emphasizing the government's commitment to improving the educational sector.
In addition to the school renovations, the government has also allocated ₦3.2 billion for the construction of secondary schools in the state's three senatorial districts. The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, revealed new appointments, including Oba Daramola Oluwasola Samuel as the new Olupele of Ipele in Owo Local Government Area, and the upgrade of the Olusan of Ayesan chieftaincy to monarchical status.
Furthermore, the state government is addressing health initiatives with the upcoming "Project 10 Million," scheduled for October 13-19, 2024, aimed at screening residents for hypertension and diabetes. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Prof. Simidele Odimayo, highlighted the low incidence of Lassa fever and zero cases of cholera and monkeypox in September.
The government has also approved the renovation of primary healthcare facilities in all 203 wards, which will include security fencing, staff accommodation, solar power, and borehole installations.
Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Oyeniyi Oseni, discussed the technical review of the Ayetoro shoreline protection project, promising both temporary and long-term solutions to prevent further flooding. Additionally, the Commissioner for Information, Otunba Wale Akinlosotu, reaffirmed the governor's commitment to fixing all potholes in the state by December 2024 and ensuring regular salary payments.
