Parents of Deceased UK Teenager Plead with Nigerian Scammers to Stop Cruel Sextortion Activities

F.Adenike

The parents of 16-year-old Murray from the UK, Mark and Ros Dowey, have called on Nigerian scammers to cease their cruel sextortion activities.

Their son tragically took his own life after being deceived by scammers posing as a girl, who coerced him into sending compromising images.

The Doweys' heartfelt message shows the devastating impact such scams have on young lives.

Murray's father, Mark, described his son as "a really lovely kid," expressing disbelief at the sudden loss.

"He went up to his room, and he was absolutely fine. And you know, we found him dead the next morning," he recounted.

His mother, Ros, lamented the lack of warning signs, saying, "We had no chance to intervene, to notice there was something wrong and try and help and fix it."

The Doweys' video message has resonated deeply, even prompting a change of heart in one Lagos-based scammer, who admitted feeling remorseful after watching their plea."You’re abusing children, You’ve ended Murray’s life," the Doweys stated, urging perpetrators to consider the human cost of their actions. "How would they feel if it was their child or their little brother or their friend?"

This tragic case is part of a larger issue, with a US court recently sentencing two Nigerian brothers for a similar crime that led to another teenager's suicide.

The Doweys have also criticized social media companies for not doing enough to protect children online.

In response, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has removed thousands of accounts linked to sextortion scams in Nigeria.
