Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) gathered at the PDP State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt to protest ahead of the upcoming Local Government election in Rivers State.
The protest erupted on Thursday, causing significant traffic disruptions as security personnel struggled to manage the large crowd.
Protesters brandished placards and banners, chanting slogans and marching along the highway. One prominent banner declared, "TAI people say no to lawlessness. Say no to LGA election. RSIEC must obey court judgment. SIM must obey court judgement." This reflects the protesters' demand for adherence to legal rulings concerning the election process.
The protest coincides with the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) announcement that it has not yet released the 2023 Voter Register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
Johnson Alalibo, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, explained during a press briefing in Port Harcourt that while RSIEC had requested the register, its release was delayed due to administrative reasons. Alalibo also confirmed that the Commission had received a court judgment from Abuja preventing the release of the register, further complicating the electoral preparations.
