The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has pre emptively announced the results of the Edo State governorship election before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which is constitutionally mandated to do so.

This unprecedented move took place on Sunday, September 22, 2024, during a press conference led by Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintiri.

Governor Fintiri, flanked by other PDP governors, declared, "The figures we are announcing come from our collation agents, who were compiling results before INEC disrupted the process.

" This announcement has raised eyebrows and questions about electoral protocol and the roles of political parties versus official bodies in declaring election results.

The election itself is a tight race between the PDP's Asue Ighodalo and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo. According to the results uploaded on INEC’s Results Viewing (IReV) portal, Ighodalo is leading in the Edo South Senatorial District, while Okpebholo is ahead in the Edo North Senatorial District. As of Sunday morning, INEC had uploaded about 97 percent of the results from the 4,519 polling units.

This incident has sparked a debate on the integrity and transparency of the electoral process. The official results are still pending as INEC continues its collation at the central Collation Centre in Benin City.
