Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Governor of Anambra State, addressed the controversy surrounding his alleged comments on dismantling Nigeria's church structure.

The Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR) has firmly refuted these claims, which they describe as a significant distortion of Obi's message during a recent interview.

According to POMR, the misinterpretation arose from a misleading headline that twisted Obi's words to serve a "mischievous agenda." In reality, Obi's remarks were intended to encourage Nigerians to integrate faith with meaningful work, rather than criticize religious practices. He emphasized his respect for all faiths, citing biblical references to underscore his point.

Obi referenced Apostle James, stating, "Faith without works is unhelpful," and further highlighted Proverbs 14:23, which notes that "all hard work brings profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty."

Obi's suggestion to "turn night vigils into production nights" was not a call to dismantle churches but an appeal to emphasize worship through productive endeavors. As Ibrahim Umar, spokesperson for POMR, explained, "Even Jesus Christ did not choose his 12 disciples while they were praying; he found them working fishermen, tax collectors, and so forth."
