A tragic plane crash occurred in Brazil's Sao Paulo state, resulting in the deaths of all 62 people on board.
The VoePass flight 2283, an ATR 72-500 model, was en route to Sao Paulo’s international airport Guarulhos when it crashed into a residential area in the city of Vinhedo.
The aircraft, carrying 58 passengers and four crew members, spiraled out of control and plummeted into several homes, causing a fiery wreck.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, military police, and civil defense teams, were dispatched to the scene.
Despite their efforts, no survivors were found. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva declared three days of mourning and asked the nation to observe a minute of silence in honor of the victims.
Witnesses described the crash as a "moment of panic" for the city. One resident, Ana Lucia de Lima, recounted how she ducked down and began praying as the plane hit near her home.
The crash site was marked by flaming wreckage and bodies strewn about, as captured in video footage verified by the Associated Press.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. While meteorological conditions, including potential icing, were considered, aviation experts cautioned against drawing conclusions based solely on images.
The plane's black box has been recovered, and authorities are working to identify the victims with the help of medical, X-ray, and dental records provided by family members.
This incident marks the deadliest airline crash since January 2023, when a Yeti Airlines plane in Nepal stalled and crashed, killing 72 people. The ATR 72, used primarily for shorter flights, has been involved in several fatal crashes over the years, raising concerns about its safety record.
