President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping are currently engaged in a high-stakes bilateral meeting in Beijing.
This event is part of the China-Africa Collaboration Summit, aimed at attracting more foreign direct investment to Nigeria.
The summit has drawn an impressive roster of attendees, including prominent officials from the Chinese government's economic team, members of the Nigeria Governors' Forum led by its Chairman, Governor Abdulrazak Abdulrahman of Kwara State, and Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State. Also present are key members of President Tinubu's economic team and other cabinet members. Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale had earlier briefed journalists at the State House in Abuja about the objectives of this official visit.
"Mr. President will also meet with his Chinese counterpart in the person of President Xi Jinping, where several MOUs will be signed," Ngelale stated. He elaborated that these Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) would cover a wide range of sectors, including the green economy, agriculture, satellite technology development, media enterprise development, blue economic development, and national planning cooperation.
"This is going to be part of a broader engagement where the two heads of state will discuss matters of mutual interest across, not just the economy, but also on issues of national, regional, and international security," Ngelale added.
The meeting also comes amidst recent reports of a Chinese company seizing some aircraft belonging to the Nigerian government, adding another layer of complexity to the discussions.
