The Nigerian Senate moved forward with a legislative proposal aimed at fostering development in the South South region.

The bill to establish the South South Development Commission (SSDC) successfully passed its second reading, marking a crucial step in addressing regional disparities. Sponsored by Senator Ekpeyong Asuquo from Cross River South, the SSDC is designed to manage funds from the Federation Account Allocation and other sources, including donations, aids, and grants.

Its primary objectives are to tackle infrastructural deficits, militancy, communal crises, and ecological challenges.

The SSDC is distinct from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), which is resource-based and primarily benefits states with oil production.

Senator Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa Central emphasized that not all South South states currently benefit from the NDDC, highlighting the need for a commission based on geopolitical zones. He stated, “The South South Development Commission is created based on geopolitical zones and I plead that senators should support this bill as it is often said, what is good for the goose is good for the gander.”

The bill received backing from Senators Suleman Kawu and Enyinnaya Abaribe, who echoed the sentiment for equitable growth across the region.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, commended the foresight of the bill's sponsor and acknowledged the understanding shown by senators from other geopolitical zones. Following a voice vote, the bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Special Duties for further examination.

This legislative move shows the ongoing discussions in the Senate regarding federal structure reviews, university funding allocations, and local government autonomy.
