President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Nigeria, marking a major diplomatic event as it will be the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Nigeria in 17 years. The visit is scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024.
The primary purpose of Prime Minister Modi's visit is to engage in discussions aimed at "strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria" and exploring new areas to deepen bilateral cooperation. This visit signifies India's commitment to the Global South, with a particular emphasis on Africa, making Nigeria a focal point for India's West African engagement.
The Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Shri G. Balasubramanian, highlighted the long-standing strategic partnership between the two nations, which dates back to 2007. This partnership has seen increasing collaboration in sectors such as energy, defense, and the economy.
Notably, over 200 Indian companies have invested more than $27 billion across critical sectors in Nigeria, underscoring the robust economic ties between the two countries.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to address the Indian community in Nigeria, further strengthening cultural and social bonds. This aspect of the visit highlights the importance of community relations alongside diplomatic and economic engagements.
