President Tinubu Makes New Appointments Into INEC

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced new appointments to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), a decision that has sparked widespread discussion about the future of Nigeria's electoral integrity.

Tinubu appointed Abdulrazak Yusuf Tukur as the National Commissioner representing the North West and nominated Saseyi Feyijimi Ibiyemi to replace the late Resident Electoral Commissioner of Ogun State.

Tukur, who has been with INEC since 1999, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Bayero University and furthered his education with a postgraduate diploma in Economics from Bradford University, England, and a Master of Arts from Leeds University. His career at INEC saw him rise to the position of Director of Electoral Operations and Logistics.

Meanwhile, Ibiyemi, currently the Administrative Secretary of INEC in Lagos State, is an alumna of Obafemi Awolowo University and was called to the bar in 1988. Her appointment is set to fill the vacancy left by ‘Niyi Ijalaye, who passed away in August.

These appointments are pending Senate confirmation, but they have already elicited mixed reactions. Supporters argue that Tinubu's choices reflect a commitment to maintaining the integrity of Nigeria's electoral system.

As one commentator noted, "Appointing people with vast experience like Tukur shows he is committed to ensuring the integrity of our electoral system." However, critics question the independence of INEC under Tinubu's influence.

Concerns have been raised about the potential for these appointments to impact the 2027 elections, with some suggesting that the moves are strategically aimed at consolidating power.

A vocal critic expressed skepticism, stating, "Why is the president having a say in INEC... it should be an independent body."
