The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu's economic policies, particularly condemning his decision to remove fuel subsidies without considering the adverse consequences.
Benson Upah, an NLC spokesperson, expressed these views, contrasting Tinubu's approach unfavorably with those of his predecessors, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.
Upah highlighted that former President Buhari was more accommodating and took significant steps to stabilize the economy and improve living conditions. "He did everything humanly possible to ensure that life was stable and good. When he came in, he gave money to the states to pay the backlog of salaries and pensions, but it was diverted. He made other interventions to avoid the insane increases," Upah stated.
The NLC spokesperson also pointed out the deteriorating exchange rate under Tinubu's administration compared to Jonathan's tenure. "We said Jonathan had messed up this country, but now look at the indices and compare the exchange rate, the interest rate, the debt. So, we are in a situation where we are progressively getting worse," Upah added.
These criticisms shows the NLC's concerns over the current economic trajectory and its potential impact on Nigerians' quality of life.
The removal of the fuel subsidy by Tinubu has been a particularly contentious issue, with Upah stating that the president did not think of the consequential effects of the pronouncement.
