President Bola Tinubu is set to embark on a three-day official visit to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, starting Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

This diplomatic trip comes at the invitation of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo and aims to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.

Accompanying President Tinubu will be Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and other key cabinet members who will participate in high-level meetings and the signing of various agreements.

The primary focus of the discussions between the two leaders will be on enhancing cooperation in the oil and gas sector and bolstering security ties.

The visit signifies the importance of the maritime boundary shared by the two nations, established through a bilateral agreement in 2000, which extends through the Gulf of Guinea for 98 miles. This boundary is crucial for both countries, given their significant economic activities in the region.

Equatorial Guinea, known for its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and unique culture, also plays a vital role in regional politics under the long-standing leadership of President Mbasogo, the longest-serving African president.

The country’s economy heavily relies on oil, accounting for 80 percent of total exports and 90 percent of government revenues, with major trading partners including Spain, China, the United States, and Japan.
