The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) City of David Parish in Lagos has officially appointed Pastor Kayode Pitan as the new head pastor, succeeding Pastor Charles Kpandei.
This transition follows the suspension and subsequent resignation of Pastor Idowu Iluyomade.
Pastor Iluyomade's tenure at the City of David parish came to an abrupt end following a series of controversies.
The most notable incident was the extravagant celebration of his wife Siju Iluyomade's 60th birthday, which took place shortly after the death of Herbert Wigwe, the former CEO of Access Bank and a prominent church member.
The lavish party, featuring popular Nigerian high-life singer Flavour N’abania, drew significant public criticism for its timing and the presence of a secular musician.
In response to the backlash, the RCCG Governing Council suspended Pastor Iluyomade on June 1, 2024, and he was asked to resume duties at the church's headquarters. However, he chose to resign instead of serving his three-month suspension and accepting a transfer to another parish in Ebute Meta.
During the interim period, Pastor Charles Kpandei took over the leadership of the City of David parish.
His tenure saw the initiation of an audit by KPMG, an external auditor, to address financial discrepancies within the parish, particularly concerning a N320 million debt.
On August 12, 2024, the RCCG Governing Council confirmed Pastor Kayode Pitan's appointment during their annual convention. Prior to this role, Pitan served as the Pastor in Charge of the Tabernacle of David in Region 51 and held the position of Regional Pastor.
His extensive background in banking and finance, including his tenure as Managing Director and CEO of the Bank of Industry (BoI), is expected to be instrumental in managing the Trinity Tower project and leading the City of David parish.
With this new appointment, Pastor Pitan will oversee Region 20, with the City of David serving as its headquarters. Pastor Ben Akabueze has been named Assistant Pastor in Charge of Region 20, while Pastor Kpandei returns to his previous role as Pastor in Charge of Region 11 in Lekki.
