Lady Gaga has long been a figure of intrigue and speculation, particularly regarding her gender identity. In a recent interview on the Netflix series "What’s Next? The Future With Bill Gates," she delved into why she chose to ignore persistent rumors that she was transgender. These rumors, which began circulating in 2011, were fueled by doctored photos and rampant online speculation.
Gaga explained that she avoided responding to these rumors to prevent reinforcing the idea that being transgender is something to be ashamed of. She stated, "The reason why I didn’t answer the question is because I didn’t feel like a victim with that lie. But I thought, ‘What about a kid who is being accused of that, who would think a public figure like me would feel shame?’”

Throughout her career, Gaga has faced numerous falsehoods and misinformation. She noted, “I’ve been used to lies being printed about me since I was 20 years old. I’m a performer. I think it’s kind of funny.” Instead of directly addressing the rumors, she aimed to use the misinformation to create a disruptive point, challenging societal norms and perceptions.
Her approach has been consistent with her broader activism for mental health awareness and LGBT rights. By not dignifying the rumors with a response, she hoped to send a message that such accusations should not be seen as damaging or shameful. This stance has further solidified her loyal relationship with the LGBTQ+ community.
