Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent socio-cultural organization from Nigeria's South-East, has issued a stark warning to the Federal Government.

The group has called for an urgent overhaul of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in response to the ongoing economic challenges exacerbated by repeated hikes in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

The latest increase saw fuel prices soar to N1,030 per liter in the Federal Capital Territory and N998 in Lagos, up from previous rates of N897 and N885 respectively.

This adjustment, which follows pricing decisions linked to the Dangote Refinery, has intensified the economic hardship faced by Nigerians, leading to widespread public discontent.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the Factional Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, expressed grave concerns over the situation. In an exclusive interview, he stated, "The unilateral increases threaten to plunge the average Nigerian into an abyss of economic despair, especially as we approach the festive season—a time traditionally marked by joy and communal celebration."

Isiguzoro emphasized the need for immediate action, warning that without a comprehensive overhaul of NNPCL's management, the country risks descending into "a state of uncontainable civil unrest." He criticized the current leadership for their role in the "abysmal state of affairs" and urged the government to support local investments in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure as a viable alternative to PMS.

Furthermore, Ohanaeze Ndigbo advocates for the conversion of vehicles to CNG or electric alternatives, highlighting this as a strategic move to reduce dependency on petrol. The organization calls for unity among Nigerians—individuals, communities, and leaders alike—to demand urgent reforms that will restore integrity, efficiency, and accountability within national institutions.

As the nation grapples with these economic challenges, the call for reform resonates not only within Nigeria but also among international observers concerned about the potential for civil unrest.
