The Nigerian House of Representatives has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to relocate its local government offices to more secure and neutral locations.
This initiative is aimed at ensuring that INEC can conduct elections free from undue influence and maintain its independence.
The call for relocation was spearheaded by Rep. Sunday Nnamchi, who expressed concerns about the current positioning of INEC offices.
"The proximity of these offices to local government headquarters exposes INEC to manipulation and control by council chairmen, particularly in areas dominated by a single political party," Nnamchi stated.
He emphasized that this situation could compromise the impartiality of the electoral process, as guaranteed by the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
The motion, titled "Call for Relocation of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Local Government Offices to Neutral Locations," was adopted by the House.
In response, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas mandated the Committee on Electoral Matters to collaborate with INEC and other stakeholders to ensure compliance.
The committee is expected to report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
