Nigerian lawyer and politician, Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere has firmly denied allegations that he paid $1.7 million to secure his position as Chairman of the House Committee on Downstream Petroleum.
Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, described the claims as "false, nonsensical, and childish" attempts to divert attention from endemic corruption in the oil industry.
In a statement issued in Abuja by his Chief of Staff, Ernest Njesi, Ugochinyere emphasized that "only a stupid and childish mind can believe that he gave the Speaker 1.7m dollars."
He further stated that the allegations were an "attempt to drag the speaker and his name into a Hollywood fiction story," and vowed that all those who aided in spreading these stories would face legal consequences.
Ugochinyere reaffirmed his commitment to fighting for good governance and expressed confidence in the House leadership's decision to dissolve the joint committee investigating challenges in the oil sector. He supported the Speaker's judgment, stating, "if setting up an ad-hoc committee to carry out the investigation is better then he agrees with him."
The lawmaker also praised the inclusive administration style of Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Kalu, noting that their approach has maintained stability in the 10th House over the past year.
He concluded by stating, "We remain unfazed by the disjointed attacks and smear campaign against our Honorable Speaker and the House leadership. These efforts by unprofessional and corrupt elements aim to taint the media space in a desperate attempt to evade the inevitable consequences of their actions. I am steadfast in my commitment to fighting for good governance."
