Reps Committee Pushes for Improved Efficiency in FCT Courts, Judiciary

The House of Representatives Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Judiciary on Thursday conducted an oversight visit to several FCT courts.

The purpose of this visit was to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the judiciary's operations and to address existing challenges. This initiative was led by the Chairman of the House Committee on FCT Judiciary, Adamu Ibrahim Gamawa.

The committee's visit was not intended as a witch-hunt but rather as a means to assess the condition of the courts and identify potential solutions to their challenges. As stated by Gamawa, "The visit enables us to know the state of some of the ongoing projects." This aligns with the constitutional provisions that empower legislators to perform oversight roles.

During the visit, Chief Registrar Hadisa Dodo highlighted several pressing issues faced by the judiciary. These included "underfunding of the construction of the High Court complex in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja," as well as "inadequate funding for the construction of Magistrates' quarters and additional courtrooms, and inadequate official vehicles."

The committee's evaluation also involved reviewing the utilization of previously allocated funds, including those from the 2024 budget, to inform the 2025 budget planning for the FCT Judiciary.

This reflects the committee's commitment to enhancing judicial infrastructure and addressing resource allocation problems to improve the judiciary's functionality in the Federal Capital Territory.
