Reps Reject Six-Year Single Term Proposal for Nigerian President, Governors

F.Adenike

Nigerian House of Representatives voted against a bill proposing a six-year single term for the President and Governors.

This bill, introduced by Ikenga Ugochinyere along with 33 other sponsors, aimed to amend the 1999 constitution.

The proposed changes included shortening political tenures and implementing zonal rotation for presidential and governorship positions, which were intended to promote inclusive governance.

The bill also suggested that all elections should be held simultaneously to minimize the financial and administrative burdens associated with periodic elections.

Despite these intentions, the proposal was met with resistance and ultimately rejected through a voice vote led by the Speaker. As noted in the session, "The nays had it," indicating the majority's opposition to the bill.
