The Federal Government of Nigeria, led by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo, has taken the bold step of initiating a major technology upgrade to counter financial extortion at airports.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu has acquired 1,000 body cameras, which are being distributed among key agencies such as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and Nigerian Customs Service (NCS). These cameras are designed for live transmission to a command center, ensuring real-time monitoring and accountability.

Keyamo emphasized the government's commitment to eradicating extortion by agency officers, stating that "training has commenced for officers of those agencies on how to operate the cameras." The initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance security measures at all airports, with the cameras functioning similarly to CCTV systems but without playback capabilities, thus providing continuous oversight.

This technological advancement is complemented by ongoing improvements in the aviation sector, including a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to establish a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Abuja.

Keyamo expressed optimism about these reforms, asserting that "Nigerians will soon take pride in the upcoming aviation reforms," as the government moves swiftly to address longstanding challenges in the sector.
