The local government elections in Rivers State, Nigeria, on October 5, 2024, were marred by violence as heavy gunshots rang out in the Rumuepirikom community, notably the home of Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to reports, unidentified individuals had infiltrated the community prior to the election, warning residents against participating.
As electoral officers approached a ward in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, suspected political thugs armed with weapons stormed the location, creating chaos and effectively holding the community hostage.
This violent disruption resulted in at least one person sustaining a bullet injury, who was subsequently rushed to a health facility for treatment.
