A diplomatic rift emerged as the Russian government accused the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine of attempting to undermine its relationship with Nigeria. This accusation came in the wake of nationwide hunger protests in Nigeria, where demonstrators in the North were seen waving Russian flags, sparking speculations of foreign interference.

The controversy intensified when Nigeria's Department of State Service arrested seven Polish nationals in connection with the flag incident.

However, these individuals were later identified as students visiting Nigeria, with no involvement in the protests. Despite this clarification, the incident fueled debates about potential foreign meddling in Nigeria's internal affairs.

Reacting to the situation, the Russian government distanced itself from the protests, firmly denying any involvement. In a letter released by Yury Paramonov, the official Press Secretary of the Russian embassy in Nigeria, Moscow accused Western nations of orchestrating a media campaign to "drive a wedge" between Russia and Nigeria.

The letter stated, "The Embassy categorically rejects such accusations and reiterates that the Russian Federation neither had any involvement in the protests that occurred in the recent past nor does it have any connection to any potential future demonstrations or unrest."

Russia emphasized its respect for Nigeria's sovereignty and adherence to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of independent states. The letter further criticized statements by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other Western officials, suggesting that they were part of a coordinated effort to blame Russia for the unrest.

This incident has sparked broader discussions on the geopolitical dynamics involving Russia, Western countries, and African states like Nigeria. It underscores the complexities of international relations and the narratives of foreign interference in domestic affairs, highlighting the potential impact on diplomatic ties between these nations.
