Sanwo-Olu Urges Lagos Residents to Disregard "Igbo Must Go" Reports

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has addressed and condemned a divisive social media post that called for Igbo people to vacate Lagos and Southwest Nigeria.

The post, originating from the social media handle LagosPedia on X (formerly Twitter), announced a massive hashtag campaign, #IgboMustGo, scheduled from August 20th to 30th, 2024.

In a statement delivered through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu firmly dismissed the post as "reckless and divisive," emphasizing that it was an attempt to sow discord between the Yoruba in the Southwest and other tribes, particularly those who have made Lagos their permanent home.

He stated, “The attention of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been drawn to a post by LagosPedia, a social media handle on X (formerly Twitter) that calls on the Igbo to vacate Lagos and Southwest of Nigeria and brace up for a massive hashtag IgboMustGo protest from 20th to 30th August, 2024.”

Sanwo-Olu reassured residents that Lagos remains a welcoming home for every Nigerian citizen, regardless of their ethnic background. He urged the public to ignore such inflammatory posts and not allow any individual or group to create tension within the state. The governor also called on security agencies to investigate the origins of the divisive message and bring those responsible to justice.
