Senate Launches Probe into NDLEA's Drug Allegations Against Senator Ashiru

Esther

The Nigerian Senate has initiated an Ad-hoc Committee to investigate serious allegations of drug trafficking against Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, who represents the Kwara South Senatorial District.

This development follows accusations from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the arrest of some aides associated with Senator Ashiru.

Senator Ashiru, in response to these allegations, invoked Order 42 of the Senate Rules, which allows for personal explanation. He described the NDLEA's claims as "baseless and unfounded," suggesting that they were a reaction to his involvement in a legislative debate. Specifically, Ashiru had supported a bill aimed at establishing a new agency focused on drug awareness and rehabilitation, which he argued was necessary due to the increasing drug-related issues in his constituency.

Ashiru's defense highlights a broader tension between lawmakers and law enforcement agencies in Nigeria. He emphasized that the allegations were an infringement on his rights as a senator, stating, "In my life, I am 68 years now, I assert that I cannot even identify cannabis or any drug." His remarks underscore a potential conflict between legislative initiatives aimed at reforming drug policy and the operational practices of agencies like the NDLEA.

The formation of the Senate's investigative panel is a critical step in addressing these allegations. It not only seeks to clarify the veracity of the claims against Ashiru but also serves as a platform to examine the relationship between legislative actions and law enforcement responses.

The outcome of this investigation could have implications for how drug-related policies are shaped and enforced in Nigeria.
