Senate Makes Move to Strengthen Security in Border Communities

Esther

The Nigerian Senate has embarked on a pivotal initiative aimed at bolstering security in the nation's border communities. This move was highlighted during a two-day stakeholder engagement held in Abuja, in collaboration with Global Consult Limited.

The primary focus of this engagement was to address the persistent issue of cross-border crimes that have long hindered development in these regions.

Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe, who chairs the Senate Committee on States and Local Governments Administration, emphasized the critical need to tackle insecurity head-on.

He stated, "We are concerned about the development of our border communities, the security of the people living there as well as programs that will give everyone a sense of belonging." This statement signifies the Senate's commitment to ensuring that the inhabitants of border areas feel integrated into the broader national framework.

One of the key issues identified by the Senate is the lack of basic amenities in these border communities, which has contributed to the high rate of crimes.

Senator Yaroe pointed out that "the rate of crimes witnessed at the border communities can also be traced to long years of neglect and lack of basic amenities for Nigerian border communities."

To address this, the Senate plans to work closely with relevant stakeholders to integrate these sub-national communities into Nigeria's economic management system.

Another major concern raised during the engagement was the absence of clear demarcation of border areas, which has led to numerous conflicts.

Senator Yaroe expressed his concerns, noting that "most of the border communities are yet to be demarcated and properly defined, adding that some of the conflicts are as a result of no clear-cut defined borders."

The initiative received enthusiastic support from the deputy governors of Abia, Gombe, and Ekiti states. They expressed optimism that the Senate's efforts would finally address the myriad challenges faced by residents of border areas.

This collaborative approach is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing security, fostering development, and ensuring a sense of belonging for those living in these regions.
