Senate to Eradicate Illegal Mining Activities in Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate on Monday reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities that have been depriving the federal government of significant revenue and exacerbating food and physical insecurity across the nation.

This determination was articulated by Senator Ekong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, during a visit to Niger State. The visit was prompted by the tragic collapse of a mining pit in Shiroro on June 3, 2024, which resulted in approximately 30 fatalities and displaced numerous families.

Senator Ekong emphasized that illegal and unregulated mining operations pose substantial obstacles to harnessing the multi-billion-dollar potential of Nigeria’s minerals sector.

He noted that unauthorized miners often employ unsafe and environmentally harmful practices, which not only undermine the sector's potential but also threaten environmental and public health.

"The illegal mining practices, using crude methods and little regard for safety, continue to undermine our mining sector’s potential and threaten environmental and public health," Ekong stated.

In response to these challenges, the Senate is committed to creating legislative solutions aimed at supporting the growth and safety of Nigeria’s mining industry.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State expressed the state's readiness to collaborate with the National Assembly to enact laws that would reform the mining sector, benefiting all stakeholders, including federal and state governments, local communities, and miners.

He introduced the concept of "Responsible Mining," inspired by models from Brazil, which would require companies to provide community support such as potable water, healthcare, and education to mitigate the impacts of mining.

The Senate's initiative shows the economic potential of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, highlighting that curbing illegal mining could generate substantial revenue, diversify the economy, and boost Nigeria’s GDP.

Governor Bago assured the Senate of Niger State’s commitment to advancing responsible mining practices, pointing out that artisanal mining has led to loss of lives and property and has fueled insecurity. With a responsible mining bill, they aim to ensure that mining activities are sustainable and beneficial for communities.

Senator Ekong conveyed condolences to the people of Niger State for the Shiroro tragedy and praised the swift response of the Niger State Government and the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals. He urged for further assistance to the affected families, stressing the need for collaboration to address these challenges and protect national resources.
