Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South has vowed to campaign vigorously against the legislation against President Bola Tinubu's proposed tax bill.

The senator, aligning with other Northern leaders, argues that the Federal Government should focus on improving the standard of living for Nigerians before considering any tax increases. "This tax they’re talking about; we are almost losing the middle class in Nigeria," Ndume stated, highlighting the critical issue of the disappearing middle class and the widespread struggle for survival.

Ndume has accused the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, along with other economic managers, of misleading President Tinubu regarding the tax proposal. He emphasized the impropriety of raising taxes in regions already burdened by poverty, particularly in the North. "The poverty is too much in the North. Let us be frank about that. So, you want to increase taxes again?" he questioned, pointing out that affluent individuals and major corporations often evade taxes, exacerbating the situation.

Firmly against the bill, Ndume declared, "I am one of those opposing that Tax Bill in the National Assembly. I am not going to support it." He stressed the need for a balanced fiscal strategy that is sensitive to regional disparities and called for a focus on ensuring Nigerians can live comfortably rather than merely survive.

This opposition reflects broader concerns about economic management, equity in taxation, and the social responsibilities of wealthier entities within Nigeria.
