Senator Ned Nwoko, representing the Delta North Senatorial District, has reiterated his support for a controversial bill that seeks to legalize the carrying of firearms by Nigerian citizens.
This proposal comes amid escalating security challenges in Nigeria, with rising crime rates prompting debates on effective measures for citizen protection.
During an appearance on Channels Television, Nwoko defended the bill, arguing that empowering citizens to bear arms could serve as a deterrent to criminal activities. He cited examples from other countries where armed citizens reportedly experience lower crime rates.
Nwoko shared a personal tragedy to underline the urgency of his proposal. In November 2023, his Senior Legislative Aide was kidnapped and murdered during a violent assault on his residential estate.
"The estate was attacked by kidnappers going from house to house," Nwoko recounted. "When they got to their door, my SLA told his wife to hide with the children. He opened the door to talk to them, and he was taken away. We never saw him alive again." He argued that if his aide or others in the community had been armed, the kidnappers might not have dared to attack.
Despite the controversy surrounding the proposal, Nwoko emphasized that the bill includes strict regulations to prevent unlawful use of firearms. Prospective gun owners would be required to undergo training, receive medical clearance, and obtain endorsements from local authorities. The senator maintained that only qualified individuals would be permitted to carry arms if the legislation is passed.
