Elon Musk has issued warning regarding the potential impact of a Kamala Harris presidency on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Musk, who acquired X for $44 billion to "protect free speech," expressed concerns that Harris would use governmental power to shut down the platform.
Musk's apprehensions were shared during a conversation with podcaster Joe Rogan. He suggested that a Harris administration might intensify an existing advertiser boycott against X, which he attributes to the Center for Countering Digital Hate.
Musk described this organization as a "censorship organization" and accused it of misleading advertisers about the prevalence of harmful content on X. In response, X Corp filed a lawsuit against the Center last year, alleging that it exaggerated such claims to deter investment.
Musk's comments reflect a broader narrative of tension between government regulation and freedom of speech, particularly in the context of social media platforms. He speculated that if Donald Trump were to win the election, the boycott might diminish, whereas a Harris victory could lead to increased pressure and potential shutdown of X.
Musk outlined possible scenarios where the Department of Justice (DOJ) could be used to target X under the guise of addressing hate speech or misinformation. He cited a previous DOJ lawsuit against SpaceX, which was put on hold, as an example of how governmental power could be wielded against his enterprises.
