Shehu Sani Calls for Self-Reflection in the North After Blaming Other Regions

Former Senator representing Kaduna North Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has called for introspection among northerners, urging them to take responsibility for the region's underdevelopment rather than blaming other regions.

In a statement on his verified Facebook page on August 4, 2024, Sani highlighted several socio-economic issues plaguing the North and attributed them to internal factors.

Sani criticized the cultural norms that prevent women from working or using their skills, leaving them vulnerable when they become widows. He also pointed out the reluctance of young people to serve as apprentices due to a lack of patience and commitment.

Furthermore, he condemned the practice of parents in rural areas sending their children to religious teachers in cities, where they are often forced to beg or steal.

He stated, "For ethnic, religious, and sectional reasons, we have protected, defended, praised, and refused to hold accountable all our kinsmen who led the country at every wasted opportunity for five decades."

Sani emphasized that the bandits and terrorists causing havoc in the North are not outsiders but come from within the region itself.

Sani lamented the decline in education, noting that despite free public schools, many children do not attend. He also criticized the preference for voting based on short-term gains like food handouts rather than long-term benefits.

The former senator highlighted the negative impact of religious conspiracies on health immunization, leading to widespread preventable diseases among children.

He further criticized the economic decisions made by northerners, such as prioritizing expensive items like iPhones over business capital and wedding expenses over education.

Sani pointed out the closure of industries and factories in Kano, Kaduna, and Jos during the tenure of northern leaders, attributing it to poor governance.

Sani concluded by questioning why northerners have not dominated private businesses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) despite having huge resources and power historically. He urged northerners to recognize that "eighty percent of our problems are ourselves and not anyone ‘outside of ourselves.’"
