Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has provided a detailed explanation on the process required to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Speaking on the matter, Sani emphasized that "a senator must initiate Akpabio’s impeachment by consulting his colleagues and garnering enough numbers to push for his impeachment."
He further warned that any senator who attempts this and fails would face suspension until the next election.
Sani's comments came in response to heightened calls for Akpabio's resignation following his controversial remarks about ongoing hunger protests.
The Senate President had stated that he and other government officials would be "eating" while Nigerians protested against economic hardships, a comment that sparked widespread outrage and led to the trending hashtag #AkpabioMustGo on social media.
In a post shared on his X page, Sani reiterated, "Removing Akpabio is only possible if a Senator consults his colleagues and gets enough votes to initiate an impeachment. If the plot fails, the Senator may go on suspension till the next election."
This statement was made amidst a backdrop of nationwide protests and criticism from various quarters, including Amnesty International Nigeria, which described Akpabio's comments as "insensitive and reckless."
The protests, part of the EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement, saw aggrieved Nigerians taking to the streets to demand better governance and accountability from their leaders.
Sani's clarification on the impeachment process has sparked discussions among Nigerians, with some questioning whether Akpabio is untouchable and others viewing the potential impeachment as a risky but necessary move.
