Simon Ekpa Issues Ultimatum for Nnamdi Kanu's Release, Threatens 30-Day Lockdown

Leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE), Simon Ekpa has announced a major escalation in the ongoing conflict between pro-Biafra groups and the Nigerian government.

In a statement released via his official X handle, Ekpa declared a month-long lockdown of Nigerian government offices in the South-East region, set to commence on August 28, 2024, and end on September 26, 2024. This decision was reached during a virtual meeting with his BRGIE cabinet.

Ekpa's announcement comes amid heightened tensions over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been a central figure in the Biafran independence movement and has faced numerous legal challenges since his arrest in 2015 on charges including treason and terrorism.

Despite various court orders for his release, Kanu remains detained, a situation that has sparked widespread unrest and calls for his freedom from both domestic and international human rights organizations.

In his statement, Ekpa demanded "the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu and all other Biafrans detained by the Nigerian government," as well as the "demilitarisation of the South-East."

He cited ongoing violence and insecurity in the region, including "the continued killings of Christians and Biafrans within Biafra territory, invasion of churches, and abducting worshippers," as key reasons for the lockdown.

The proposed lockdown will affect all Nigerian government offices in the states of Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Anambra. Ekpa emphasized that the action is a direct response to the Nigerian government's failure to address these security concerns and the prolonged detention of Kanu.

This move by Ekpa and the BRGIE is not without precedent. Despite IPOB calling off its earlier declared Monday sit-at-home protests, the Ekpa-led BRGIE has continued to enforce such measures in the South-East, demonstrating their persistent influence and commitment to their cause.

The situation remains fluid, with potential implications for political stability and security in Nigeria's South-East region. The international community and human rights organizations continue to monitor developments closely, advocating for a peaceful resolution and adherence to the rule of law.
