A new terrorist group known as LAKURAWAS has emerged, raising significant alarm among the Sokoto State government.
Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir described LAKURAWAS as "a faith-based group with idealistic views," noting that they possess sophisticated weapons and have been involved in criminal activities across five local government areas in Sokoto.
This unsettling emergence compounds the state's existing struggles with persistent banditry.
Gobir emphasized the gravity of the situation during a meeting with participants from Course 33 of the National Defence College (NDC) from Abuja, who were on a study tour in the state.
He assured that "the state government is collaborating closely with federal security agencies to tackle the many threats to the lives and property of the residents of Sokoto."
The deputy governor expressed hope that insights gained from the NDC's study tour would aid in effectively managing these security challenges.
Air Vice Marshal Titus Zuwahu Dauda, head of the NDC delegation, highlighted the college's role in preparing military and strategic agency officers for high-level responsibilities, signifying the importance of such collaborative efforts in addressing terrorism and banditry in the region.
