The mother of Nigerian musician Speed Darlington, known as Queen Theresa Onuorah, has publicly pleaded with Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy for the release of her son.
This plea comes after Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Okoye, was reportedly arrested in Lagos and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged by Burna Boy, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu.
The controversy began when Speed Darlington posted a video on social media questioning the authenticity of Burna Boy's Grammy award, suggesting that his association with American rapper Diddy played a role in his win.
This accusation led to an online dispute between the two musicians. In the contentious video, Speed Darlington allegedly mocked Burna Boy’s connection with Diddy, who had been embroiled in legal issues in the United States.
Following the video's release, Speed Darlington went missing, prompting his mother to make a heartfelt appeal. In a viral video, she stated, "Please, Burna Boy, Speed Darlington is my only son; I’m begging you Nigerians to help me beg Burna Boy. Burna Boy, I’m on my knees begging you, tampered justice with mercy. Have mercy on my son. Forgive him, please."
She further implored, "I don’t know what to say again other than to beg because I’m a mother, grandmother. I’m just asking for forgiveness; I’m just begging you to release my son."
Deji Adeyanju, a prominent Nigerian lawyer and activist, confirmed the arrest on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), stating, "We just spent the last 30 minutes with Speed Darlington, and he narrated how he was arrested in Lagos on Friday last week, moved around, and eventually brought to Abuja. The petition against him was written by Burna Boy, we can confirm."
