Super Eagles Arrive Nigeria Following Airport Nightmare in Libya

Nigeria's national football team, The Super Eagles have returned to their home country after a harrowing experience in Libya.

The team landed at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano State on October 14, 2024, following an ordeal that lasted over 13 hours at a Libyan airport. This incident occurred as they were en route for a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

Their journey was fraught with unexpected challenges. Initially, their flight was diverted to a remote airport far from their intended destination, necessitating an additional three-hour road trip. Upon arrival, the players and officials found themselves stranded without access to basic necessities such as food, water, or a place to rest.

Photos of the team sleeping on benches circulated widely, drawing international condemnation and prompting Nigerian authorities to describe the situation as "unfortunate."

The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, likened the experience to an "almost hostage" situation, emphasizing the psychological toll it took on the team.

Consequently, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) decided to withdraw the Super Eagles from the qualifying match, prioritizing the safety and well-being of the players.

In response to the incident, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced an investigation into the "disturbing conditions" faced by the Super Eagles, promising to take appropriate action against those responsible. Meanwhile, the Libyan Football Federation denied any wrongdoing, attributing the delay to logistical issues.

Despite the ordeal, the team's captain, William Troost-Ekong, expressed resilience and unity, stating, "BACK HOME SAFE & SOUND. Proud of this team, NAIJA SPIRIT can’t be broken." His sentiments were echoed by Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface, who celebrated their return to Nigeria.
