The Nigerian Senate has demanded an apology from the Libyan government following the ill-treatment of the Super Eagles, Nigeria's senior male football team, during their recent visit to Libya.

The incident occurred after the Super Eagles' 1-0 victory over Libya in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. As the team was en route to Benghazi for their fourth Group D match, their flight was unexpectedly diverted to Al Abraq, a city over two hours away from their intended destination.

This diversion left the players and officials stranded at the airport for more than 12 hours without any assistance from the Libyan Football Federation.

In response to this ordeal, the Nigerian Senate, led by Deputy President Barau I. Jibrin, condemned the treatment as "terrible and condemnable," emphasizing that sports should promote unity and brotherhood among nations.

The Senate has called on the Libyan authorities to issue an apology and urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also demanded appropriate sanctions against those responsible, stating, "We demand a thorough investigation from the Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and appropriate sanctions to be meted out against those involved."
