David Coote, a Premier League referee, was recently been suspended by the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) following the emergence of a controversial video.
The video, which went viral on social media, allegedly shows Coote making derogatory comments about Liverpool Football Club and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp. This incident has prompted a full investigation by PGMOL, with no further comments to be made until the process is complete.
The video, which remains unverified, was widely circulated on platforms like X, formerly known as Twitter, and appears to depict Coote speaking negatively about a match between Liverpool and Burnley in 2020.
During that game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, Klopp criticized Coote's decision-making, particularly for not awarding a penalty to Liverpool. In the video, Coote reportedly uses expletives to describe Klopp, calling him "arrogant."
Coote, who began officiating in the English Premier League in 2018, has refereed several high-profile matches, including Liverpool's recent 2-0 victory over Aston Villa. Despite his experience and reputation as one of England's top referees, this incident has raised serious concerns about his impartiality and professionalism.
Adding to the controversy, another video surfaced showing an individual resembling Coote allegedly snorting white powder during Euro 2024. This has further complicated the situation, leading to increased scrutiny from both the PGMOL and the English Football Association (FA), which is also investigating the matter.
