TCN Provides Update on Nigeria's Blackout Following Latest National Grid Collapse

Esther

Nigeria experienced yet another national grid collapse, marking the twelfth such incident this year.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported that the grid failure occurred at approximately 11:29 am due to a sudden frequency spike from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz, which was traced back to issues at one of their substations. This necessitated an immediate shutdown to prevent further complications.

In response to the blackout, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah announced that bulk power restoration efforts commenced promptly, with the Abuja Axis regaining electricity within 28 minutes.

However, recovery operations were still ongoing in other affected areas. TCN is actively engaged in major repair work on several critical transmission lines and substations, including the 330kV transmission lines along the Shiroro-Mando axis and major upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation.

The company has also begun addressing weaknesses identified in previous grid collapse investigations, focusing on both technical upgrades and strategic interventions to enhance the grid's stability and resilience.

Despite these efforts, TCN acknowledged that some instability might persist until all major works are completed. They appealed for public understanding and patience during this challenging period.

The frequent grid collapses have sparked widespread frustration among Nigerians, who lament the regularity of these disturbances. The government and TCN continue to work towards a more stable power supply, but the path to resolution remains fraught with challenges.
