Thousands of U.S. Minors Undergo Gender Surgeries in Five Years, Report Reveals

Over 5,700 American minors underwent gender-affirming surgeries between 2019 and 2023. This data comes from the "Does My Hospital Transition Kids?" database, launched by the advocacy group Do No Harm.

The database tracks various treatments for gender dysphoria, including puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgeries.

The report highlights that a total of 13,994 minors received some form of gender-affirming care during this period.

Specifically, 5,747 minors underwent surgeries such as mastectomies and genital reassignment procedures.

Additionally, 8,579 children were administered puberty blockers or hormone replacement therapy, with over 60,000 prescriptions issued in total.

Financially, the cost of these medical treatments reached $119 million, with California alone accounting for more than $28 million from 2,000 patients.

The data, sourced from insurance claims across the country, underscores significant regional variations in the availability and cost of transgender medical care for minors.

Stanley Goldfarb, chairman of Do No Harm, emphasized the meticulous nature of their data collection, stating, “We’ve really been meticulous in trying to make sure that the data are as clear as possible and are as accurate as possible.

If anything, we’re showing the lower limits of what’s going on… to be certain that we’re not overstating it one iota.”

Activist Chloe Cole, who detransitioned after receiving gender-affirming treatment as a minor, criticized the medical field, claiming that “thousands of kids are being treated like guinea pigs for unproven medical experiments.”

Cole, who underwent a double mastectomy at 15 and started puberty blockers and testosterone at age 13, urged politicians and parents to use the database to protect children from irreversible treatments.
