The Tinubu presidency has confirmed that the South-East (SE) and South-South (SS) regions of Nigeria have each received only one appointment across 22 key government and security agencies.

This revelation has raised concerns about the adherence to the Federal Character Act, which mandates equitable representation across Nigeria's diverse regions.

The distribution of appointments has been notably skewed, with the North-West securing the highest number of positions at eight, followed by the South-West with five, and the North-Central with four.

The North-East received three appointments, while the SE and SS were left with just one each. Critics argue that this pattern reflects a bias towards the South-West, a region from which many of President Tinubu's close associates reportedly hail.

Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to the President on Public Communications and Orientation, defended the administration's choices, stating that the appointments reflect "the administration’s commitment to equitable representation across Nigeria’s regions." However, this assertion has been met with skepticism, as the appointments appear to contravene Section 14 (3) of the Federal Character Act, which emphasizes the need for balanced regional representation to promote national unity.

The controversy has led to accusations of "Yorubanisation," a term used to describe perceived favoritism towards the Yoruba ethnic group of the South-West.

This sentiment is fueled by the fact that several high-profile positions, including the Inspector General of Police and the Chief of Army Staff, are held by individuals from the South-West.
