Tinubu Rejects Bill to Extend Tenure of Federal and State Legislators

F.Adenike

President Bola Tinubu has declined to approve a bill that sought to extend the tenure and retirement age of legislative officers in Nigeria's National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly.

This decision was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a Senate session on Tuesday.

The bill, which had faced significant opposition from senators earlier this year, was initially put on hold in February 2024 for further examination and consultations with stakeholders.

Despite these efforts, the bill has now been officially rejected by the President.

In a letter read by Senate President Akpabio, President Tinubu stated, "Upon thorough examination and careful consideration, I have decided to withhold my assent to the bill.

This decision is made by the powers vested in me by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."

He further expressed his appreciation for the Senate's diligent work on the bill, adding, "I hope you will receive it with understanding. Please accept the assurances of my highest regard."

This decision comes at a time of significant political and economic events in Nigeria, including the appointment of a new Chief Justice and ongoing debates about the nation's economic challenges.
