President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive action to address public concerns over excessive government spending. It was announced that Tinubu has ordered a huge reduction in the size of Nigeria's official delegation to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meetings in New York.
Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila revealed this directive during a one-day retreat organized by the State House Management for heads of government agencies. Gbajabiamila emphasized that this move is part of the administration's broader commitment to prudent resource management and reducing the cost of governance.
"During recent protests, there were talks about reduction in cost of governance. Everyone is waiting to see if Nigeria, as in the past, will send the ‘largest delegation’ to UNGA," Gbajabiamila stated. He further noted that some individuals have historically used such international meetings for personal business rather than official duties.
Gbajabiamila made it clear that only officials with legitimate business at the UNGA would be permitted to travel. "If you have no business at the UN General Assembly, do not step foot in America, and this is a directive from Mr. President," he asserted.
This decision aligns with the administration's efforts to ensure efficient service delivery and accountability in government operations. The Chief of Staff also highlighted that the retreat aimed to foster collaboration and coordination among government agencies to achieve the objectives of President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.
"The idea is to ensure coherence as we jointly work together to achieve the objectives of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Coordination is not just a choice but a necessity for the government to succeed and for us to meet the expectations of the Nigerian people," Gbajabiamila added.
