President Bola Tinubu has decided to forgo attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead the Nigerian delegation at the global event scheduled from September 24 to 28, 2024.

The announcement was made through a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President. The statement clarified that President Tinubu, who recently returned from trips to China and the United Kingdom, is prioritizing pressing domestic issues, particularly the aftermath of severe flooding that has affected various parts of the country.

"President Tinubu, who returned to the country last Sunday after his trip to China and the United Kingdom, wants to focus on domestic issues and address some of the country’s challenges, especially after the recent devastating flooding," the statement read.

Vice President Shettima will not only deliver Nigeria’s national statement to the General Assembly but will also participate in important sideline events and hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders.

This year's UNGA theme, "Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations," underscores the global commitment to inclusive progress.

This decision highlights Nigeria's dual approach of addressing urgent internal challenges while maintaining its presence on the international stage. By delegating this responsibility to Vice President Shettima, President Tinubu aims to ensure that Nigeria remains an active participant in global discussions, even as it tackles critical issues at home.
