President Bola Tinubu called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to ensure that Nigeria remains the "giant of Africa." The event, held on September 29, 2024, saw 823 officers commissioned into the nation's military.
President Tinubu, represented by Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, emphasized the need for the military to engage adversaries with increased gallantry and sophistication. He highlighted the pressing issues facing the nation, including economic challenges, deteriorating living standards, unemployment, and insecurity.
"We are the giant of Africa and must remain so," Tinubu declared, urging the armed forces to stay focused and professional within the democratic framework. He also stressed the importance of loyalty, commitment, dedication, resilience, and service from the newly commissioned officers.
Addressing the socio-economic challenges, Tinubu lamented, "Nigeria is faced with multiple challenges that have attempted to destroy our nationhood." However, he assured that his administration is determined to unite the country and improve the quality of life for all Nigerians. "As a responsible government, we have identified the crux of the nation’s problems and are working hard to confront these issues," he added.
Tinubu also directed the leadership of the Nigerian armed forces to develop a robust policy to support the families of soldiers who have lost their lives. "Each time we look into military barracks, what strikes us most is the number of widows and their children whose husbands sacrificed their lives for the survival of the nation," he said.
The President concluded by reaffirming his administration's commitment to creating better living conditions for Nigerians and ensuring national unity. "We need the cooperation of all Nigerians for better answers in our interest," he stated.
