The United Kingdom has expressed its willingness to engage in discussions regarding slot allocations for Nigerian airline Air Peace at Heathrow Airport.
This comes after Nigeria's Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, sent a diplomatic letter to the UK's aviation authorities, formally requesting landing slots for Air Peace at London's premier tier-A airport.
The request from Nigeria is part of a broader effort to secure fairer access to international airspace for its national carrier.
The UK's Secretary of State for Transport, Louise Haigh, responded positively, indicating that her department is "open to further discussions on the matter."
These discussions are expected to take place during the upcoming International Civil Aviation Negotiations event in October 2024.
This situation arises amidst tensions between the two countries, as Nigeria has threatened to deny UK carriers access to Lagos and Abuja airports if Air Peace continues to be denied slots at Heathrow. Such threats underscore the strategic importance of airport slot allocations and highlight the complexities inherent in international aviation relations.
