Mariah Carey, the Grammy-winning singer, has confirmed that her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, both passed away on the same day over the past weekend. In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Carey expressed her profound grief, stating, "My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day." The 55-year-old singer added that she felt blessed to have spent the last week with her mother before her passing.

Patricia Carey, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, had a complex relationship with her daughter Mariah, which was marked by a mix of pride, pain, and gratitude. Despite their ups and downs, they shared moments of collaboration, including a festive duet for ABC's "Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You" special in 2010. Mariah also dedicated part of her memoir to her mother, acknowledging her efforts and expressing enduring love.

Alison Carey, who was estranged from Mariah, died at 63 from complications related to her organ function while in hospice care. Alison had faced numerous challenges throughout her life, including struggles with homelessness and substance use disorder. She had been living in Greene County, New York, where she passed away at her home in Coxsackie. Alison's friend and advocate, David Baker, confirmed her death and noted that her children were able to spend time with her before she passed.

The news of their deaths has left Mariah Carey seeking privacy during this difficult time. She appreciates the love and support from her fans and the public as she navigates this period of immense loss.
