Chelsea are in advanced negotiations to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen from Napoli. The potential deal, which has been the subject of intense speculation and numerous discussions, could see Romelu Lukaku heading in the opposite direction to join the Italian club.
Victor Osimhen, widely regarded as one of the best strikers in the world, has been a standout performer for Napoli.
Known for his elite finishing, pace, strength and athleticism, the 25-year-old Nigerian international has scored 76 goals in 133 appearances since joining the Serie A side from Lille in July 2020. His prowess on the field has made him a coveted asset for top clubs across Europe.
Chelsea's interest in Osimhen has been persistent throughout the summer transfer window. Despite the complexities involved, including Osimhen's substantial release clause of £110 million, the Blues remain keen on bringing the prolific striker to Stamford Bridge.
According to Sky Sports News' chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol, "Discussions have centred on Lukaku going on a permanent deal to Napoli, while Osimhen moving to Chelsea either permanently or on an initial loan with an obligation to buy have both been discussed."
The negotiations have not been straightforward. Napoli's new head coach, Antonio Conte, is eager to reunite with Romelu Lukaku, whom he managed during their successful stint at Inter Milan.
However, the financial aspects of the deal, including Osimhen's higher wages compared to Lukaku. Osimhen currently earns €10 million (£8.4 million) per year, while Lukaku's salary stands at €7 million (£5.9 million).
Despite these challenges, there is renewed hope for Chelsea fans. Reports suggest that negotiations between Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain over a potential deal for Osimhen have broken down, potentially opening the door for Chelsea.
As football.london's Amie Wilson notes, "Chelsea could still complete a transfer for striker Victor Osimhen before the end of the transfer window, but it will depend on Napoli changing their stance on a deal."
The situation remains fluid, with both clubs exploring various options to finalize the transfer. Matt Law from The Telegraph adds, "If at any stage Napoli show a willingness to loan Osimhen other than sell him, Chelsea will look at it. I have been told that by a very good source, but at the moment Napoli haven’t shown a willingness to loan. But should they do, then Chelsea will be there."
