Former President Donald Trump has been vocal about his approach to ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, which has been raging for over two years and has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties.

In a recent statement, Trump claimed that "Ukraine lies about the numbers of casualties" as he laid out his secret plan to bring the conflict to an end.

According to sources familiar with his strategy, Trump’s proposal involves pressuring Ukraine to cede territories such as Crimea and the Donbas region to Russia.

This plan has drawn massive criticism from foreign policy experts and some Republicans, who argue that it would reward Russian President Vladimir Putin and condone the violation of internationally recognized borders by force.

Trump's approach is seen as a dramatic reversal of President Biden’s policy, which has focused on curtailing Russian aggression and providing military aid to Ukraine.

Trump has privately stated that he believes both Russia and Ukraine "want to save face, they want a way out," and that people in parts of Ukraine would be okay with being part of Russia.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected any notion of surrendering territory, emphasizing that such concessions would leave Ukraine vulnerable to future hostilities from Russia.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a former critic turned ally of Trump, has been actively trying to dissuade him from this course of action. "He has to pay a price. He can’t win at the end of this," Graham said, referring to Putin.

Critics like Fiona Hill, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and former top Russia adviser to Trump, have expressed doubts about the feasibility of Trump's peace efforts, likening them to unvetted plans from 2017 that failed to materialize.

Trump's plan also includes limiting NATO expansion, a move that has raised concerns among European allies.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, known for his pro-Russian stance, recently met with Trump and falsely claimed that Trump would cut off all aid to Ukraine. Although Trump did not publicly contradict Orban, this statement has added to the unease surrounding his proposed strategy.

As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Trump continues to boast that he could negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours if elected. However, his reluctance to provide specific details on how he would achieve this has left many skeptical.

Analysts warn that any attempt to resolve the war through territorial concessions would likely involve extensive negotiations and could weaken Ukraine's capacity to defend itself without substantial U.S. support.
