Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has voiced strong criticism against the United States' recent decision to permit Ukraine to deploy American long-range ATACMS missiles against Russian military targets.
Erdogan described this move as a "big mistake," cautioning that it could escalate tensions into a "major war."
The remarks were made following the G20 summit in Rio, where Erdogan highlighted the potential global ramifications of this policy shift. He noted that the decision has already provoked a "furious response from Moscow," which has expanded its criteria for deploying nuclear weapons, now allowing for a nuclear response to massive air attacks, even if they involve conventional weapons.
Turkey finds itself in a precarious position, maintaining friendly relations with both Ukraine and Russia. While Turkey has provided drones to Ukraine, it has refrained from participating in Western sanctions against Russia.
Erdogan emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts, urging for a peace deal to be reached "as soon as possible" to prevent further escalation.
