U.S. Secret Service Puts Agents on Leave in Trump Assassination Attempt Investigation

Esther

In the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, the U.S. Secret Service has placed at least five agents on administrative leave, including the head of the Pittsburgh field office.

This decision comes as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident that occurred on July 13, 2024, in Butler, Pennsylvania.

During a campaign rally, a 20-year-old gunman fired eight rounds from a rooftop, one of which grazed Trump's ear. The assailant was subsequently neutralized by a Secret Service sniper.

The agents placed on leave include one from Trump's detail and three others from the Pittsburgh office. The Secret Service's internal affairs division is scrutinizing the security lapses that allowed the gunman to get so close to the former president.

"Our mission assurance review is progressing, and we are examining the processes, procedures, and factors that led to this operational failure," stated Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

He emphasized that the agency holds its personnel to the highest professional standards and that any violations of policy will be thoroughly investigated.

The fallout from the assassination attempt has been massive. Kimberly Cheatle, the then-director of the Secret Service, resigned on July 23, 2024, after facing intense scrutiny from Congress and failing to provide specific details about the investigation.

She was succeeded by Acting Director Ronald Rowe, who expressed his shame over the incident and committed to a thorough investigation.

Congress has also taken action, with the House forming a task force to investigate the assassination attempt and the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs demanding extensive records from various law enforcement agencies.

Trump, undeterred, held his first outdoor rally since the shooting this week, surrounded by bulletproof glass as a precautionary measure.
